In the Beginning, GOD … (Genesis 1:1)
The Bible says that He started it all. Before Him, there was no one else, and nothing else. He is the First Cause that has caused and continues to cause all things.
“For by Him, and for Him, were all things made.”
Some people attempt to make their god in an image that is convenient and comfortable to them (idol worship). Others worship nature as their “god” (the Bible says they prefer to worship the creation rather than the Creator).
People today seem to be searching for God more than ever. Its no wonder. The Bible says that “He has hidden eternity in our hearts.” Its like God has wired us to worship. And if we don’t worship the one true God, we will end up worshiping something else fore sure – another god we fashion, perhaps money, our car, other possessions, power, sex, or even another person.
Perspectives on God
Some religions insist that God is an absolute unity (Islam). They refuse to allow the possibility that God may have a form of existence that is different from their presuppositions.
Other religions insist that God is made up of several person (Mormonism). A Father God, a Son God, and a spiritual essence. But is this consistence with what the Bible teaches? I think not. God clearly proclaims in many places “I am God, and there is none other.”
Some religions and belief systems hold that the universe is God – Karl Sagan appeared to take this position, when he insisted that the “cosmos” was all that exists. Several eastern religions promote the idea that the universe is “god”, and that one’s goal ought to be “one with the universe”.
What Does the Bible Say?
The Bible says that in the beginning, GOD created everything (Gen 1:1). It also says that he is a Father. And that God is “Spirit“. And that He is a Son – “for in him all the fullness of the Godhead dwells in bodily form.”
What asked His name by Moses, He replied: “Tell them that I am that I am.” He is the independent First Cause of all things, and upon Him all things depend.
He is not impersonal, but a personal God: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) And He made us in His “image” – with the same characteristics. He gave us the ability to create, to love, and to choose. Will you choose Him?
